about

Bird calls are social instruments. Their purpose is to imitate in order to attract, lure or establish communication between humans and birds. Ornithopies explores three possible uses, according to the sensibilities and tastes of seven musicians from the insub collective.

Anna Kaisa Meklin, Anouck Genthon, Christophe Berthet, Cyril Bondi, Laurent Peter, Raphaël Ortis, Rodolphe Loubatière and Violeta Motta were each given an instrument. They had to learn how to use the bird call according to three instructions: (a) imitate the target bird, (b) work on an extended technique specific to the instrument, (c) imagine how to imitate a bird trying to imitate a human. The musicians had to pay attention to the sound gesture as well as to its dynamics, its nuances and timings, with a concern for accuracy.

The primary aim of this work was to prepare the ensemble for a performance on the La Loi site in Laconnex. This piece was made from separate recordings of the seven performers. Attentive to their way of inhabiting space and time, according to their way of being bird, instrument or imitated human, Ornithopies proposes listening to a moving biotope made up of voices that intermingle and seem to respond to each other as they transform. The ambient sounds in the piece come from Insub's studio, or have been collected on the grounds of La Loi and on the terrace of the Chez le Docteur restaurant in Laconnex. They allow the three instrumental movements to be associated with three distinct sound environments, a way of paying homage to the places and people that inspired this piece.
